Dutch Treat Birthday Party Invitation

I am helping the wife of a dear family friend with the invitations for a suprise 50th birthday party for her husband. It will be celebrated at a local resturant, but unfortunately, the wife cannot bare the expense for everyone's meal. How could I note this on the invitation without making it seem tacky that each person will be responsible for their meal? Also, in most places, parties larger than 7 pay more gratituty. Should this be mentioned? Help!

Did anyone respond to this question? I have the same situation. I'm ready to send out the invitations for my husband's 50th surprise birthday party and want to indicate that it is dutch treat.

I had an anniversary party for my parents, and i just made the invitation to say "Please join us in celebrating, at your own expense, the 25th anniversary of....." That way it was made clear upfron, and then ask them to rsvp early so you have plenty of time to make your reservations.

"at your own expense" sounds kind of tacky and a litle negative. Isn't there a better way to do it?

What about... Join us for a birthday dinner at RESTAURANT NAME on DATE at TIME. There will be a special menu just for our party at $20 per person. You could even say no gifts requested or something like that so people know they don't have to do both. How does that sound?
